At Thompson Dental, our team may introduce patients of the McKinney, TX, community looking to have cosmetic work done to a solution such as natural-looking veneers. Veneers are an excellent way for patients to disguise imperfections on the front of the smile, specifically on the anterior teeth. These teeth are the most visible when patients laugh, talk, or smile with others. If breakage, permanent staining, or gaps are causing the smile to look less than beautiful, it might be time to ask a dentist about the benefits of treatments such as porcelain veneers.
What are porcelain veneers?
Veneers are technically a thin restoration made of porcelain or even composite resin that bond onto a tooth to cover problem areas. Patients use veneers to address:
- Small gaps between teeth
- Crooked or misaligned teeth
- Permanently stained teeth
- Damaged teeth (chipped, cracked, etc.)
- Unusually shaped teeth
How long do porcelain veneers last?
Most patients who have veneers placed will find that the porcelain restoration will last a decade or longer with proper care. However, getting composite veneers will only provide a few years of coverage as composite resin is more prone to staining from foods and beverages. These may need to be replaced much sooner than a porcelain alternative. During a consultation appointment, Dr. Ryan Thompson will explain the pros and cons of getting composite veneers versus porcelain veneers.
What can I expect from the process of obtaining porcelain veneers?
With porcelain veneers, patients can expect to be adequately anesthetized and sedated before the dentist starts. Dr. Ryan Thompson then removes a thin portion of the enamel near the front of the smile and roughens the surface to ensure better adhesion. Impressions are made and sent to a ceramist to create the final veneer, while a temporary is placed. When the final veneer is completed, patients will then return to the office to remove their temporary veneer and bond the porcelain one in place to finish the process.
