Dental Checkups and X-rays

Home » Dental Checkups and X-rays

To avoid gum disease and tooth decay, patients need to be aware of how much time they spend protecting their smiles with preventative care. Brushing the teeth alone cannot maintain a healthy smile. Instead, patients should take a proactive approach to dentistry to achieve and maintain oral health and wellness. Part of taking care of the smile is visiting regular dental checkups and x-rays with a McKinney, TX area dentist. Dr. Ryan Thompson and his team at Thompson Dental are committed to providing patients with routine care to ensure improved oral health.

Why are dental checkups important?

While brushing and flossing after every meal can significantly reduce a patient’s risk of developing periodontal disease or tooth decay, it is not the only way to keep the smile healthy. With routine checkups at a dental office, patients can have x-rays done along with a physical evaluation by Dr. Ryan Thompson to determine if a patient needs further treatments. Many conditions that are caught early can successfully improve with dental intervention. Cavities forming can be treated as soon as possible to keep them from becoming more extensive, more expensive problems. Patients who have the starting signs of periodontal disease can have it treated before it becomes an irreversible issue.

Why should a dental hygienist clean my teeth?

Even the most diligent brushers and flossers may find that there are areas of the smile where the toothbrush and floss can be difficult to use, such as the molars near the back of the mouth. That is where the benefit of professional cleaning can help. Dental hygienists have the instruments available to remove plaque, tartar, and calculus from the teeth where a patient cannot.
