Your smile is designed to last a lifetime. However, things happen during the years that can impact the teeth and gums’ function and health. If one or more teeth in the smile are affected by large cavities or damage, discoloration, gaps, or misalignment, it may be in one’s best interests to place a restoration such as a porcelain dental crown or dental veneer. At the practice of Thompson Dental, we are honored to provide same-day restorations with CEREC dental crowns and veneers for patients in McKinney, Texas.
WHAT IS A CEREC RESTORATION?
A CEREC crown or veneer is a dental restoration made in one day, often referred to as “one-visit dentistry.” CEREC is a specialized CAD/CAM software program and a milling device that provides porcelain restorations while patients wait. This method eliminates the need for messy impressions and molds used by other dentists in the area when creating porcelain restorations. Digital scans are taken after preparing the tooth and are sent to the software to create a digital image. Then, this is used to mill a dental crown or a dental veneer out of a block of porcelain. This restoration is then ready to bond in place to eliminate the need for a temporary crown/veneer or a patient’s return appointment. Wait time in the office differs between patients and the tooth/teeth that are being restored.
ARE CEREC CROWNS/VENEERS DURABLE?
Absolutely! CEREC dental restorations can last just as long as laboratory-created crowns or veneers but are created in a fraction of the time.
WHAT ARE CEREC CROWNS/VENEERS MADE WITH?
Like laboratory-created dental restorations, CEREC crowns and veneers are also created from porcelain. They are made to match the patient’s existing tooth colors for seamless integration.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF CEREC RESTORATIONS?
- Digital scans
- No goopy impressions
- No temporaries
- Same-day treatment
WHAT ARE PORCELAIN CROWNS?
A dental crown or cap is a dental restoration that fully covers or caps a tooth. A crown is needed when a large cavity, fracture, or crack line threatens the health and stability of a tooth. A dental crown restores the shape, strength, function, and appearance of the tooth. Typically, the tooth is shaped, so the crown can fit snugly over it and is bonded in place with dental cement.
WHAT ARE PORCELAIN VENEERS?
Veneers are a thin restoration made of porcelain bonded onto a tooth to cover problem areas. Patients use veneers to address:
- Small gaps between teeth
- Crooked or misaligned teeth
- Permanently stained teeth
- Damaged teeth (chipped, cracked, etc.)
- Unusually shaped teeth
